Free Community Screening: Kensuke's Kingdom

Join us for a free community screening of Kensuke’s Kingdom, presented in partnership with the Egan Maritime Institute as part of its 2026 Shipwreck Showtimes film series, which explores islands as places of refuge and wonder. All are welcome to stay for a 15-minute post-film discussion led by Egan staff.

Based on the beloved novel by Michael Morpurgo, Kensuke’s Kingdom follows eleven-year-old Michael, who is swept overboard during a family sailing trip and washes ashore on a seemingly uninhabited island in the Pacific — alongside his dog. There, he encounters Kensuke, a Japanese man who has lived alone on the island for decades. Initially wary of one another, the two must learn to trust and work together when danger threatens their fragile island home.

This beautifully animated adaptation was a Grand Prize Winner at the 2024 New York International Children’s Film Festival and is a moving story of survival, friendship, and understanding for audiences of all ages.
